Aloe Vera Hair Growth

Does Aloe Vera Help Hair Growth ?

Many are familiar with the incredible benefits of aloe vera for healing burns. However, did you ever think it would be good for “hair growth”? Studies are showing that it can be very useful to treat topical hair loss. This is because too often, hair loss can be a result of decreased circulation to the head (i.e. micro circulation defects), and aloe is a stimulant; meaning it promotes circulation.

Brushing Promotes Hair Growth

Often people that are experiencing hair loss/thinning are afraid to touch their hair, brush the area or stroke their hands through their hair because of the possibility that more hair will come out and make things worse. I’m sure some men don’t even scrub shampoo into their hair because they are afraid of more hair loss.

Let’s get this straight! This is false, false, false! It is actually better to brush the area where your hair is thinning/your losing hair because it will increase blood flow to that region of your head and stimulate growth.

Alopecia

If you have never heard of alopecia, you are probably familiar with it. It is often seen on men (and women) who have small bald spots on their head. It’s not a big deal but many are self-conscious about it. Aloe vera or Aloe barbandensis gel has shown to also improve hair growth following alopecia (3).

Why you may ask? Well, it has to do with the chemical “aloenin” in the aloe, which is the major constituent responsible for promoting hair growth without irritating the skin (4).

Best Shampoo For Hair Growth

There are many shampoos with aloe vera that are very good for (a) promoting circulation to your head (i.e. increasing hair growth) and (b) moisturizing your hair and improving it’s shine. The eco-savy staff tried a whole bunch of different shampoo’s with aloe, and concluded that this one is the best (right from Thailand too! …the aloe is of much higher quality):

Aloe Vera Benefits Increase With Age of Plant

We all know the importance of aloe vera in helping sooth and heal burns, but did you ever think the age of the aloe plant mattered? New research suggests that there is a peak age for these plants in terms of antioxidant health benefits.

indoor aloe

Aloe vera contains many antioxidants which help your body fight free-radicals. Free radicals are unstable cells in your body that can lead to cancer and other harmful diseases. However, the level of antioxidants found in aloe vera can varry according to the age of the plant.  One very interesting study out of China found that the older the aloe vera plant (Aloe Barbadensis), the stronger the antioxidant/free-radical scavenging activity was! Specifically, the study found that three year-old aloe vera extract exhibited the strongest radical scavenging activity of 72.19%, compared to two year old and four year old counterparts that were also tested (1).

Overall, aloe vera contains different active components and antioxidant active components to different degrees at various stages of development. So make sure to keep you aloe plant for a few years for optimal health benefits.

Best Tea Shop For Quality and Unique Gifts

Up until this point, eco-savy has focused a lot on harmful chemicals in products and what to stay clear of. However, now and again we are going to shift our focus on the importance of behavioural science and mindset in staying healthy. Let’s face it, when we are in a great mood/mindset or someone reaches out and does something so kind and unexpected, it has a lasting affect. Having the right mindset is important for you to achieve success and happiness in all areas of your life…along with surrounding yourself with the best, healthy (toxin free) products 😉

Continuing this thought, I Sara (founder of Eco-Savy) would like to mention one of my favorite places to go in Aurora Ontario (town I am from in Canada). This small town as one of the best tea shops I have ever been to in Canada and in my travels around the world. It is called Bonsai Hill, and the owner is probably the most dedicated, educated man about tea I know.

The atmosphere is so magical at Bonsai!! Just to give you an idea, imagine drinking tea and having soft classical music playing in the background, all the while you are surrounded by really high-end unique gifts for sale (from all around the world). This is followed by local unique artwork for sale and fresh teas mounted on one wall all around the world.

We all know the incredible benefits of tea for our health in helping us loose weight (i.e. ultra skinny detox tea), have great skin and preventing illness (due to the high antioxidants), so I won’t get into that in this article. What I want to talk about primarily is kindness and mindset.

Normally, we don’t get personal here on Eco-Savy, but I felt so compelled to share my little story that sometimes it’s okay to make an exception. Anyways, today was my birthday and {of-course} I had to stop into my favourite tea store Bonsai Hill on the way home from work. Immediately I was greeted by Yanding (the store owner). Despite the fact that the store was busy, the owner still took the time to speak with me and show me all the amazing new tea additions to the store (and cute silver teaspoons which I just HAD to buy… view picture below).

When I was at the cash register, the store owner did the most kind, unexpected thing. He gave me a big bag of high-end white tea to take home. If you aren’t a tea fanatic like me, just know that “white tea” is very expensive and contains the most antioxidants of all the teas {it is also super tasty and less bitter than green tea}.

This unexpected act of kindness touched me so much that it literally made my whole day and birthday complete.  It also reminded me the power of going “out-of-the-way” sometimes and being kind to others, because you may really make a difference in that person’s day or life. For example, that small act of kindness compelled me to write this article to all 20 thousand of you who read this blog….bet Yanding (store owner) didn’t see that coming 🙂

In a world where everyone is so busy and caught up in their day-to-day activities, it’s important to reach out to one another sometimes and be kind. You just don’t know what it will lead to, or how it will positively impact that person.

Cheers.

Shocking Truth About The Memory Foam Mattress Topper

We all know the importance of a supportive mattress and how it’s NOT GOOD FOR US TO sleep on the same mattress for 15 years, but have you thought twice about what that mattress is made of? Or about the chemicals it emits over time? This is a crucial factor to your health and is often overlooked.

Why is this important?

When you consider that the average person spends ONE THIRD of their life sleeping, how could it not be important? Also, when you think of your child sleeping on a mattress that is emitting chemicals, it can be quite disturbing and bad for their health considering they have much lower tolerance levels. It is also important to know that certain mattresses emit more chemicals and are not as good for your health when compared to others (i.e. foam based mattresses).

Organic-Mattress

So what are these harsh chemicals in our mattresses?

One of the most common chemicals is called “Volatile Organic Compounds” (VOCs). These VOCs are often found on a wide array of materials and furnishings in the home including paints, glues, cleaning chemicals, air fresheners, dry-cleaned clothing, electrical equipment…and even your mattress!

GASSES IN MATRESS

Specifically, the VOCs are found in the foam and adhesive parts of the mattress {funny how memory foam mattresses are so good for you back, but can be bad for your health} and can include harmful chemicals such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), formaldehyde, benzene (carcinogenic chemical), methylene chloride, toluene, trichloroethane, naphthalene, perfluorocarbons.

Additionally, if there is mold in your mattress (let’s face it, most of us are sleeping on 10 year old mattresses, so this may be the case), then there is definitely VOCs present! How do we know this? Well, VOCs are also given off by molds and are recognized by a characteristic “moldy smell” in damp areas. So if you have old mattresses at your cottage/cabin, maybe chuck them out, as cottages tend to get really damp in the summer {especially in humid climates!}.

What can you do to avoid these chemicals?

There are many things you can do to avoid mattresses with VOCs and other harmful chemicals. We HIGHLY recommend the amazing, soft, incredible quality mattresses and organic products from the company Organic Lifestyle. You can see a lot of the positive customer testimonials here. An added bonus, is you can even buy their mattress products online – woo! Here is a testimonial from their site that we though was a good idea to share (just to further emphasize the quality and benefit of their products):

“My husband and I were looking for a mattress made completely of natural, non-toxic materials that would inhibit as much motion transfer as possible. On a bit of a leap of faith, we purchased a king-sized extra-firm rubber mattress and a split slat foundation for it. We loved it immediately. A year later, we still love it. The motion transfer from one sleeper to another is minimal, though the larger size of a king mattress might contribute to this as well. The only downside seems to be that hotel stays are no longer as comfortable as they used to be, by comparison! – Farrah, Orillia, ON”

If you aren’t 100 % sold on the whole organic mattress idea, maybe just go for an organic mattress pad?  Surpringly, traditional “memory foams mattress pads” are what contain the most harmful VOC emitting chemicals. {I personally use the wool mattress topper} .

If you are interested, I believe the store has a sale on right now too!

Are Chemicals Just Emitted In Old Mattresses?

The craziest thing about all this, is that VOCs are produced in new and old mattresses. YEP – EVEN NEW MATTRESSES! The VOCs come from the off-gassing of the mattress after it has been made. Even worse is that some mattresses are also pre-treated with formaldehyde-emitting stain and water repellents whose manufacture releases perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), classified by the U.S. EPA as a likely human carcinogen.

The main problem stems from manufacturing and packaging. Indeed, When most mattresses are manufactured they are immediately sealed in an air tight plastic covering that prevents out-gassing of the glues etc. inside the mattress, which is the main problem (traps the VOCs)- YUCK!

If you want a mattress that has 0% VOC’s, and is made from a very high quality natural materials, Eco-Savy highly recommends the mattresses from Organic Lifestyle {we can’t stress this enough}.
