Yoga is so good for your health and makes you feel great!
Here at Eco-Savy, we post so many things about chemicals to avoid and products, BUT it is equally as important to be “active” as part of your healthy lifestyle regime.
Did you know that worldwide 300 million people do yoga, and only 20 million people account for this in Canada and the USA. However, it was also found that 18.3 million people in the USA are interested in yoga, but haven’t perused it. So why not start today?!
Earlier this month Eco-Savy published an article about “triclosan in toothpaste”. However, triclosan is used in a wide variety of personal care products including shaving creams, hair conditioners, deodorants, liquid soaps, hand soaps, facial cleansers and disinfectants
Consumers have raised a lot of concern surrounding “triclosan” and earlier this month industry giant Proctor & Gamble promised to phase out triclosan and DEP (a pthalate) from products worldwide. This is SOOOO GREAT!
Triclosan is a hormone disrupting chemical that is found in over 1,600 products in Canada. It is linked to superbugs and harms aquatic organisms. Phthalates are found in fragrances and PVC, and are linked to a whole host of human health problems, including birth defects in the male reproductive system, asthma, obesity, and cancer.
Following Proctor & Gamble’s announcement, just last week Walmart U.S., the largest retailer in the United States, launched a “Policy on Sustainable Chemistry in Consumables” , laying out their plans to phase out key toxics and to improve ingredient disclosure.
Have you ever checked the ingredients in the shampoo you buy? I bet if you were to go look at your shampoo bottle right now, there will be a 99% chance “sodium lauryl/laureth sulfate” (SLS) will be the first or second ingredient. This isn’t good.
Basically we have become a society obessed with “foaming” shampoo’s…and this is all SLS does for your hair. It actually doesn’t contribute to the cleaning process AT ALL. It just gives you the “illusion” you are washing your hair, and is a cheap ingredient to put in body washes and shampoo products. Unfortunately, it is in just about everything today and we as consumers need to me more aware of this chemical ingredient and opt for “alternative choices”.
Why is SLS bad? Well, too much of anything is not good and it is in about 90% of shampoos, hand soaps and body washes on the market! Furthermore, sodium lauryl sulfate is very irritating to the eyes and skin, and may contain the carcinogen dioxane (produced during manufacturing).
